The Coromandel Coastal Classic

Trace the historic Bay of Bengal. A seamless journey through colonial Chennai, sacred Kanchipuram, and monumental Mahabalipuram.

Trip Overview

Immerse yourself in the cultural beating heart of South India. This 5-day itinerary focuses entirely on the historic Coromandel Coast. You will begin in the bustling metropolis of Chennai, exploring its British-era forts and vibrant Marina Beach. From there, journey inland to Kanchipuram, the "City of a Thousand Temples" and the epicenter of pure silk weaving. Finally, return to the coast to spend two relaxing days in Mahabalipuram, marveling at the 7th-century UNESCO World Heritage monolithic rock carvings right on the shores of the Arabian Sea.

Day 1 Arrival in Chennai & The Colonial Legacy

Arrive at Chennai International Airport (MAA). Your chauffeur will receive you and transfer you to your hotel. After a brief rest, begin your exploration of Madras. Visit Fort St. George, the first English fortress in India, and the fascinating Fort Museum. Proceed to the towering, white-spired San Thome Basilica, built over the tomb of Thomas the Apostle. In the late afternoon, take a leisurely stroll down Marina Beach—the second longest urban beach in the world—and enjoy the cool sea breeze.

Day 2 The City of Silk and Shrines (Kanchipuram)

Check out and drive to Kanchipuram (approx. 2 hours), one of the seven holiest cities in Hinduism. Visit the majestic Ekambareswarar Temple, with its towering 59-meter gopuram, and the intricately carved, sandstone Kailasanathar Temple. In the afternoon, dive into the city's legendary textile heritage. Visit a traditional weaver's cooperative to watch pure Kanjeevaram silk sarees being hand-loomed with gold and silver zari. Later, drive to the coastal town of Mahabalipuram (approx. 1.5 hours) and check into your beach resort.

Day 3 Monoliths by the Sea (Mahabalipuram)

Wake up to the sound of the Bay of Bengal. After breakfast, embark on a guided tour of the UNESCO World Heritage monuments of the Pallava dynasty. Marvel at the incredible Shore Temple, standing majestically against the ocean. Explore the Pancha Rathas (Five Chariots), monolithic temples carved from single enormous rocks. Wonder at Arjuna's Penance, a massive open-air rock relief, and take a photo seemingly holding up Krishna's Butterball—a giant balancing rock. Spend the evening relaxing at your resort.

Day 4 South Indian Heritage & Coastal Serenity

After a relaxed morning, take a short drive up the East Coast Road (ECR) to visit DakshinaChitra. This incredible living-history museum showcases the traditional architecture, art, lifestyles, and crafts of South India through authentically reconstructed heritage houses. Return to Mahabalipuram for a free afternoon. Enjoy the luxury amenities of your resort, take a dip in the sea, or explore the local stone-carving workshops that still line the streets, carrying on the 7th-century traditions.

Day 5 Departure from Chennai

Enjoy a final, peaceful coastal breakfast, savoring authentic South Indian filter coffee. Check out of your resort by late morning. Your chauffeur will drive you up the scenic East Coast Road directly back to Chennai International Airport (MAA) (approx. 1.5 hours) for your onward flight, leaving you with rich memories of the Coromandel Coast.

Travel Guide

The Coromandel Compass

Critical operational details to set the right expectations for this historical and coastal exploration.

Coastal Climate

Preparing for the heat:

  • Sun Exposure: Chennai and Mahabalipuram are famously hot and highly humid for most of the year. The monuments in Mahabs are entirely open-air with little shade. Carry wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen. The best time to visit is November to February.

Kanchipuram Dress Code

Strict temple etiquette:

  • Attire: The temples in Kanchipuram are active places of worship. Modest clothing is strictly enforced. Men should wear trousers or dhotis (no shorts), and women should wear sarees, salwar kameez, or long skirts covering the ankles. Shoulders must be covered.

Buying Kanjeevaram Silk

Authentic shopping:

  • Weavers' Co-ops: Kanchipuram is filled with touts steering tourists toward high-commission shops. We ensure you visit authentic, government-approved weavers' cooperative societies where you can witness the weaving process and buy genuine silk at fair prices.

The East Coast Road (ECR)

Navigating the drive:

  • The Highway: The drive between Chennai and Mahabalipuram via the ECR is smooth, highly scenic, and runs parallel to the Bay of Bengal. However, leaving Chennai city limits during peak hours can involve heavy traffic.

Mahabalipuram Photography

ASI guidelines:

  • Tripods & Drones: The monuments in Mahabalipuram are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Drones are strictly prohibited. The use of professional tripods generally requires prior written permission from ASI authorities.

Chettinad Cuisine

Taste the spice:

  • Local Flavors: While in Chennai and Mahabs, do not miss the opportunity to try authentic Chettinad cuisine. Known for its complex spice blends, fresh ground masalas, and fiery curries, it is a paradise for non-vegetarians, though excellent vegetarian options exist.
