West Sikkim Heritage Trail

A deeply spiritual journey through ancient monasteries, glass skywalks, and majestic Kanchenjunga views.

Trip Overview

West Sikkim is the cultural and spiritual core of the state, serving as the historical capital of the erstwhile Namgyal Kingdom. This 5-day circuit takes you to the towering heights of Pelling and Ravangla. You will walk across India's first glass Skywalk at Chenrezig, wander through the atmospheric ruins of Rabdentse, seek blessings at the sacred Khecheopalri Lake, and stand in awe beneath the colossal Buddha Park statue in Ravangla, all while being shadowed by the magnificent Mount Kanchenjunga.

Day 1 Arrival & Ascent to Pelling (7,200 ft)

Arrive at Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or NJP Railway Station. Your chauffeur will drive you through the beautiful, winding mountain roads of West Sikkim towards Pelling (approx. 5.5 hours). Set at an altitude of 7,200 feet, Pelling offers the closest and most spectacular views of Mount Kanchenjunga in the entire state. Check into your mountain resort and spend a relaxing evening acclimatizing to the altitude and crisp air.

Day 2 The Sacred Lake, Waterfalls & Ancient Ruins

After breakfast, embark on a comprehensive sightseeing tour of Pelling. Begin with the stunning Rimbi Waterfall and the majestic Kanchenjunga Waterfall. Continue to the highly revered Khecheopalri Lake; considered a wish-fulfilling lake sacred to both Buddhists and Hindus, it is famously kept completely clear of leaves by local birds. After lunch, explore the atmospheric Rabdentse Ruins (the ancient capital of Sikkim) and the premier Pemayangtse Monastery.

Day 3 The Glass Skywalk & Drive to Ravangla

In the morning, visit the incredible Chenrezig Statue and India’s first glass-bottomed Skywalk, offering terrifyingly beautiful views of the valley below. Afterwards, check out and begin a scenic drive to the serene town of Ravangla (approx. 2.5 hours). Perched on a ridge at 7,000 feet, Ravangla is known for its quiet charm and sweeping Himalayan vistas. Check into your resort and enjoy a quiet evening.

Day 4 The Colossal Buddha Park & Ralong Monastery

Dedicate the day to Ravangla’s spiritual heritage. Visit the magnificent Tathagata Tsal (Buddha Park), featuring a colossal 130-foot statue of Lord Buddha surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens and mountain peaks. Spend time meditating or walking the serene park trails. Later, visit the historically significant Ralong Monastery and the Tibetan Refugee Settlement. Enjoy your final Himalayan dinner in Ravangla.

Day 5 Descent to the Plains & Departure

Wake up early for a final, unobstructed sunrise over the Kanchenjunga range. After breakfast, check out of your hotel. Your chauffeur will begin the descent alongside the beautiful Teesta River back to Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or NJP Railway Station (approx. 4.5 hours), bringing your spectacular West Sikkim heritage journey to a close.

Travel Guide

The Heritage Compass

Critical operational details to ensure your journey through Sikkim's spiritual centers is respectful and seamless.

Kanchenjunga Views

Timing your trip for the best panoramas:

  • Clear Skies: Autumn (Oct-Nov) and Spring (Mar-May) offer the sharpest, unobstructed views of Mount Kanchenjunga from Pelling.
  • Monsoon Reality: During July and August, the peaks are almost entirely hidden by thick clouds and fog.

Monastery Etiquette

Respecting sacred spaces:

  • Dress Code: Shoulders and knees must be covered when entering Pemayangtse and Ralong monasteries.
  • Photography: Photography inside the main prayer halls of the monasteries is strictly prohibited. Always ask permission before photographing monks.

The Pelling Skywalk

Walking above the clouds:

  • Footwear: You are required to remove your shoes or wear provided protective shoe covers before stepping onto the glass bridge to prevent scratching.
  • Heights: If you suffer from severe vertigo, take caution, as the transparent floor looks directly down a steep valley.

Weather & Accommodations

Prepare for mountain chills:

  • Winter Temperatures: Both Pelling and Ravangla experience freezing nights from December to February. Premium resorts offer room heaters, but standard hotels rely on heavy bedding. Pack heavy winter gear.
  • No AC Needed: You will rarely find air conditioning in these towns as it remains cool year-round.

Rabdentse Ruins Trek

Reaching the ancient capital:

  • The Walk: Reaching the Rabdentse Ruins requires a 2-kilometer hike through a dense chestnut forest from the main gate. The path is well-paved but involves some uphill walking. Sturdy shoes are recommended.

Road Conditions

Navigating West Sikkim:

  • The Terrain: The roads connecting Pelling and Ravangla are scenic but can be quite bumpy and prone to minor landslides during heavy rains. We highly recommend upgrading to an Innova for superior comfort on this specific circuit.
