6 Days / 5 Nights

North Sikkim Alpine Safari

An expedition to the extremes. Witness the frozen sanctity of Gurudongmar Lake and the blooming rhododendrons of Yumthang.

Trip Overview

Prepare for one of the most dramatic landscapes on Earth. This 6-day expedition takes you deep into the restricted military zones of North Sikkim. You will stand at 17,800 feet beside the sacred, half-frozen Gurudongmar Lake, and drive through the breathtaking Valley of Flowers in Yumthang. To balance the intense altitudes, we begin your journey in the serene, deeply cultural Lepcha reserve of Dzongu, completely away from commercial tourism.

Day 1 Arrival & Ascent to the Lepcha Reserve (Dzongu)

Arrive at Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or NJP Railway Station. Your chauffeur will receive you and begin the ascent into Sikkim. Instead of staying in crowded Gangtok, we bypass the city and drive directly to the highly restricted, culturally rich Lepcha reserve of Dzongu (approx. 5 hours). Surrounded by dense forests and offering majestic views of Mount Kanchenjunga, check into your authentic homestay and enjoy a peaceful evening by the Teesta River.

Day 2 Waterfalls & The Drive to Lachen (9,000 ft)

After a traditional breakfast in Dzongu, begin your journey deeper into North Sikkim. We process your military permits at Mangan. The drive is spectacular, featuring plunging valleys and massive waterfalls like the Seven Sisters and Naga Falls. Arrive at the remote alpine village of Lachen by late afternoon. The air here is thin and cold. Settle into your hotel and rest early to prepare for the extreme altitude tomorrow.

Day 3 The Frozen Desert: Gurudongmar Lake (17,800 ft)

An extreme alpine start. Wake up at 4:00 AM and drive through the dark, frozen landscapes of Thangu Valley and the stark, lunar-like Tibetan plateau of Chopta Valley. Arrive at Gurudongmar Lake (17,800 ft). Considered highly sacred by Buddhists, Sikhs, and Hindus, a portion of this massive lake famously never freezes, even in sub-zero temperatures. Return to Lachen for lunch, pack up, and drive across the mountain ranges to the village of Lachung (8,600 ft) for the night.

Day 4 The Valley of Flowers: Yumthang & Zero Point

After breakfast, embark on a scenic drive to the Yumthang Valley (11,800 ft). Known as the Valley of Flowers, this vast alpine meadow is carpeted with primulas and rhododendrons in spring, and covered in thick snow during winter. Visit the therapeutic hot springs. (Optional: Depending on weather and military clearance, continue further up to Yumesamdong / Zero Point at 15,300 ft, where the civilian road ends). Return to Lachung for the night.

Day 5 Descent to the Capital (Gangtok)

Enjoy a relaxed morning in Lachung. Check out and begin the long, scenic descent back toward civilization. Make a stop at the Bhim Nala and Twin Waterfalls. Arrive in Gangtok, the vibrant capital of Sikkim, by late afternoon. Check into your hotel. Spend your evening taking a leisurely stroll down the beautifully illuminated, vehicle-free MG Marg, soaking in the lively café culture and picking up souvenirs.

Day 6 Departure from the Himalayas

Enjoy your final mountain breakfast. Check out of your hotel, and your chauffeur will drive you down alongside the roaring Teesta River back to Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or NJP Railway Station (approx. 4.5 hours), bringing your spectacular North Sikkim alpine adventure to a close.

Expedition Guide

The Alpine Safari Compass

Critical operational details to set the right expectations for this extreme, high-altitude military terrain.

Strict Military Permits

North Sikkim requires heavy clearance:

  • Documents: Inner Line Permits (ILP) are mandatory. You must carry 4 passport-size photos and original Government IDs (Voter ID or Passport). Aadhar Cards are often rejected by the military.
  • Foreign Nationals: Foreigners require Protected Area Permits (PAP) and must travel in groups of two or more. They are NOT permitted to visit Gurudongmar Lake.

Altitude Sickness (AMS)

Gurudongmar Lake sits at an extreme 17,800 ft:

  • The Risk: Oxygen levels are perilously low. You must not spend more than 20-30 minutes at the lake. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a real danger.
  • Age Restrictions: Children below 5 years and elderly guests with cardiac or respiratory issues are strictly advised against visiting Gurudongmar Lake. Carry portable oxygen.

Extreme Weather & Accommodation

Prepare for the cold reality:

  • Lachen/Lachung Infrastructure: These are remote alpine villages, not luxury cities. Power outages are frequent, and central heating is virtually non-existent. Premium resorts use portable heaters, but budget tiers rely on heavy blankets.
  • Winter Gear: Snow boots and heavy jackets are mandatory. (These can be rented locally in Yumthang).

The Rough Roads

Terrain dictates the transport:

  • The Drive: The roads in North Sikkim are notoriously bad, rocky, and prone to landslides. We strictly use high-clearance utility vehicles (Innova, Xylo, Sumo, Maxx). Expect a bumpy ride.
  • Zero Point: Access to Zero Point requires an extra fee to the driver on the spot, as it is beyond the standard Yumthang permit area.

AP Meal Plans

Food is rustic and localized:

  • No Restaurants: There are no standalone restaurants in Lachen or Lachung. All your meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) are provided at your hotel (AP Plan). The food is simple, warm, and necessary for mountain energy.

Dzongu Reserve Entry

Protecting the Lepcha heritage:

  • Special Permits: Dzongu requires a separate permit, distinct from the rest of Sikkim, to protect the indigenous Lepcha community. We handle this clearance for you to ensure a peaceful, crowdless start to your journey.
