The Coastal & Hills Circuit

A sweeping 7-day journey from the tranquil shores of Chilika to the misty pine forests of Daringbadi.

Trip Overview

Experience the most dramatic geographical transitions Odisha has to offer. This 7-day circuit takes you across Asia's largest brackish water lagoon (Chilika Lake) to the deeply serene, colonial-era beaches of Gopalpur-on-Sea. From the coast, you will ascend 3,000 feet into the Eastern Ghats to explore the "Kashmir of Odisha"—Daringbadi. Witness rare migratory birds, relax by the roaring Bay of Bengal, and hike through freezing, misty pine valleys, all in one flawless journey.

Day 1 Arrival & The Great Lagoon (Mangalajodi/Barkul)

Arrive at Biju Patnaik International Airport (Bhubaneswar) or Bhubaneswar Railway Station. Your chauffeur will drive you south towards Chilika Lake. En route, we make a highly recommended stop at Mangalajodi (the birdwatcher’s paradise of Chilika) where you can take a quiet, non-motorized boat ride to spot thousands of migratory birds. Continue to Barkul or Rambha, check into your lake-facing resort, and enjoy a peaceful evening by the water.

Day 2 Chilika Boating & Drive to Gopalpur-on-Sea

After breakfast, embark on a motorized boat cruise across the vast expanse of Chilika Lake. Visit the highly revered Kalijai Temple situated on an island, and cruise past Bird Island and Nalabana. Enjoy a fresh seafood lunch by the lake before driving further south to the serene, historic beach town of Gopalpur-on-Sea. Check into your beach resort and spend the evening watching the waves of the Bay of Bengal.

Day 3 Coastal Serenity & Tara Tarini Temple

Wake up early for a spectacular sunrise over the ocean. Spend a relaxed morning on the pristine, uncrowded sands of Gopalpur beach, exploring the ruins of the old colonial jetty. In the afternoon, take a short drive to the sacred Tara Tarini Temple, perched high on the Kumari hills along the banks of the Rushikulya River. Return to Gopalpur for a lavish coastal dinner.

Day 4 Ascent to the Kashmir of Odisha (Daringbadi)

Bid farewell to the coast as you begin your ascent into the Eastern Ghats. Drive through the incredibly scenic and winding Sorada or Taptapani ghat roads toward Daringbadi (approx. 4 hours). Feel the dramatic drop in temperature as you climb to 3,000 feet. Check into your eco-resort. In the late afternoon, visit Hill View Park to watch the mist roll over the valleys at sunset.

Day 5 Waterfalls, Pines, and Coffee Trails

After breakfast, dive into the classic Daringbadi experience. Walk through the beautifully maintained, towering Pine Forest. Visit the sprawling Daringbadi Coffee and Black Pepper Gardens, learning about the region's high-altitude agriculture. Later, take a rugged hike down to the Midubanda Waterfall, hidden deep within the forest. End the day relaxing at the picturesque Lover's Paradise.

Day 6 The Silent Valley (Mandasaru) Exploration

Today features an unforgettable offbeat excursion. Drive to the Mandasaru Valley (approx. 1 hour), famously known as the 'Silent Valley of Odisha'. This breathtaking, crowdless gorge features multiple echo points and pristine eco-parks that offer panoramic views of the plunging ravines. Spend hours soaking in the absolute silence before returning to Daringbadi for your final hill-station bonfire evening.

Day 7 Descent to the Plains & Departure

Enjoy your final breakfast amidst the misty hills. Check out and begin your descent back to the plains. Depending on your flight or train schedule, you will be driven directly to Biju Patnaik International Airport or Bhubaneswar Railway Station (approx. 5.5 hours), bringing your spectacular coastal and hill adventure to a close.

Travel Guide

The Dual Landscape Compass

Critical operational details to ensure your transition from the hot, humid coast to the freezing hills is perfectly planned.

Packing for Extremes

You will experience two different climates:

  • The Coast (Chilika/Gopalpur): Humid and warm during the day. Pack light cottons, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen.
  • The Hills (Daringbadi): Temperatures drop drastically at night, sometimes nearing zero degrees in winter. Heavy jackets, beanies, and thermals are strictly required.

Chilika Lake Logistics

Navigating Asia's largest lagoon:

  • Mangalajodi vs. Barkul: Mangalajodi uses silent, non-motorized boats specifically for bird watching (best in winter). Barkul/Rambha use larger motorized boats to reach the islands and temples. We utilize both to give you a complete experience.

The Ghat Ascent

Driving into the Eastern Ghats:

  • Motion Sickness: The drive from Gopalpur up to Daringbadi features continuous, winding switchbacks. If you are prone to motion sickness, take necessary medication before the ascent begins.
  • Vehicle Choice: We highly recommend Innova Crystas for this specific circuit due to their superior suspension on the hill roads.

Gopalpur Beach Safety

Respecting the Bay of Bengal:

  • Currents: The sea at Gopalpur can have strong undercurrents. Always swim in designated areas and strictly follow the instructions of local lifeguards. It is much quieter and cleaner than Puri.

Connectivity in Daringbadi

Prepare for a partial digital detox:

  • Network Drops: While Gopalpur has full 5G, once you enter Daringbadi (especially Mandasaru), most networks will drop. Jio and BSNL are the most reliable. Keep cash handy as UPI often fails in the hills.

A Culinary Journey

Taste the distinct regions:

  • The Coast: Indulge in massive, incredibly fresh catches of the day (prawns, crabs, and sea fish) at Chilika and Gopalpur.
  • The Hills: Transition to warm, hearty Odia hill-fare and locally grown Daringbadi coffee to beat the cold.
