You will seek blessings at two of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas (Ujjain and Omkareshwar), marvel at the riverside fort of Maheshwar, and wander the romantic ruins of Mandu. To make your journey extraordinary, we have included offbeat excursions to the blooming Gulawat Lotus Valley and the ancient, hidden rock-cut Bagh Caves.

Day 1 Arrival in Indore & The Gulawat Lotus Valley

Arrive at Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport or Indore Railway Station. Your chauffeur will greet you. Before heading to the city, take a short, offbeat detour to the breathtaking Gulawat Lotus Valley. Take a peaceful boat ride through thousands of blooming lotus flowers surrounded by dense bamboo forests. Later, check into your hotel in Indore. In the evening, visit the vibrant Sarafa Bazaar, India's famous midnight street food market.

Day 2 Indore to Ujjain (The City of Mahakal)

After breakfast, drive to the holy city of Ujjain (approx. 1.5 hours), situated on the banks of the Shipra River. Check into your hotel. Visit the immensely powerful Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga (one of the 12 sacred Shiva shrines). Later, visit the Kal Bhairav Temple, where liquor is uniquely offered to the deity, and the ancient Sandipani Ashram. Spend the evening witnessing the serene Shipra River Aarti.

Day 3 Ujjain to Omkareshwar (The Sacred Island)

If pre-booked, attend the mesmerizing early morning Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar. After breakfast, depart for Omkareshwar (approx. 3.5 hours), the second Jyotirlinga on this circuit, uniquely situated on an island shaped like the holy 'Om' symbol in the Narmada River. Take a boat ride across the river, perform your Darshan, and complete the sacred island parikrama. Check into your local hotel.

Day 4 Omkareshwar to Maheshwar (The Riverside Kingdom)

After breakfast, drive to the royal town of Maheshwar (approx. 1.5 hours). Check into your heritage property. Explore the magnificent Ahilya Fort, perched high above the Narmada River. Walk down to the beautifully carved Maheshwar Ghats, witnessing pilgrims and boatmen against a stunning architectural backdrop. Visit the local weaving centers to see how the world-renowned, incredibly delicate Maheshwari saris are crafted by hand.

Day 5 Maheshwar to Mandu (The City of Joy)

Depart for Mandu (approx. 1.5 hours), a spectacular ruined city perched on a forested plateau. Check into your resort. Spend the day exploring India's finest Afghan architecture. Visit the surreal Jahaz Mahal (Ship Palace) floating between two lakes, the beautifully austere Jama Masjid, Hoshang Shah's Tomb, and the romantic Roopmati's Pavilion, which offers sweeping views of the Narmada Valley below.

Day 6 Offbeat Exploration: The Ancient Bagh Caves

Today features a remarkable offbeat excursion. Drive from Mandu to the hidden Bagh Caves (approx. 2 hours). Often called the "Ajanta of Central India," these 5th-to-7th century rock-cut Buddhist caves feature incredible, surviving mural paintings and colossal carved pillars. Explore this quiet, ancient site before driving back toward Indore (approx. 3.5 hours). Check into your Indore hotel for your final night.

Explore Indore's royal heritage with a visit to the magnificent Rajwada Palace, a 7-story structure blending Maratha, Mughal, and French architectural styles, and the striking Lal Bagh Palace. Depending on your schedule, enjoy a final Malwi meal before your chauffeur transfers you to the Indore Airport or Railway Station for your journey home.

Travel Guide

The Spiritual Compass

Critical operational details to ensure your journey through the holy Jyotirlingas and historic ruins is seamless.

Ujjain Bhasma Aarti Protocol

Witnessing the Bhasma Aarti is the pinnacle of the Ujjain visit:

  • Advance Booking: This highly sought-after early morning (4:00 AM) ritual must be booked online weeks in advance via the official temple trust website.
  • Dress Code: Strictly traditional. Men must wear a Dhoti-Kurta (unstitched), and women must wear a Sari. No modern clothing is allowed during this specific ritual.

The Mandu Monsoon Magic

Weather deeply impacts the Mandu experience:

  • Monsoon (Jul - Sep): Mandu is spectacular during the rains. The plateau turns emerald green, and the lakes surrounding the Jahaz Mahal fill to the brim, making it look like a floating ship.
  • Winter: Also an excellent time, offering cool breezes perfect for exploring the sprawling ruins.

Omkareshwar Boating

Navigating the holy Narmada River:

  • The Crossing: You must take a short boat ride or cross the footbridge to reach the main Omkareshwar temple on the island.
  • Parikrama: We highly recommend taking a private boat for a full parikrama (circumambulation) of the 'Om' shaped island to witness the confluence of the Narmada and Kaveri rivers.

The Bagh Caves (Offbeat)

Exploring the "Ajanta of Central India":

  • Location: These caves are quite remote (approx. 90 km from Mandu). The road is scenic but goes through deep rural areas.
  • The Murals: While some paintings have faded, the scale of the rock-cut architecture is staggering. A flashlight and comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended to explore the darker chambers.

Maheshwari Silk Weaving

A royal textile legacy initiated by Queen Ahilyabai:

  • The REWA Society: Located right within the Maheshwar Fort complex, you can witness artisans working on traditional wooden handlooms creating the incredibly lightweight and elegant Maheshwari saris. An excellent, authentic place for shopping.

Indore's Street Food Culture

Indore is India's cleanest city and a foodie paradise:

  • Sarafa Bazaar: A jewelry market by day that transforms into a massive street food hub after 9:00 PM. Do not miss the Bhutte Ka Kees (corn mash) and Garadu.
  • Chappan Dukan: "56 Shops" is another famous, highly hygienic street food plaza perfect for breakfast—try the iconic Poha-Jalebi combo.
