The Wildlife & Spice Trail

Journey deep into the Cardamom Hills to track wild elephants, explore aromatic plantations, and witness ancient martial arts.

Trip Overview

Immerse yourself in the dense, fragrant wilderness of the Western Ghats. This 6-day expedition centers on Thekkady, the gateway to the Periyar Tiger Reserve. You will explore century-old spice plantations, drift across the Periyar Lake observing wild elephants on the shores, and venture into the pristine, off-the-grid eco-tourism zone of Gavi. We conclude this aromatic journey by descending back to the historic coastal city of Fort Kochi, blending nature with colonial heritage.

Day 1 Arrival in Kochi & Ascent to the Cardamom Hills

Arrive at Cochin International Airport (COK). Your private chauffeur will receive you and begin the scenic drive ascending into the Western Ghats toward Thekkady (approx. 4.5 hours). Watch the landscape change from bustling tropical plains to dense rubber and tea estates. Check into your jungle resort in Kumily/Thekkady. In the evening, attend a thrilling performance of Kalaripayattu, the world's oldest martial art, featuring incredible acrobatics and swordplay.

Day 2 The Periyar Lake Safari & Spice Plantations

Wake up early for the iconic Periyar Lake Boat Safari. As the morning mist lifts, the boat silently glides through the partially submerged tree trunks. Keep a sharp eye on the banks; this is one of the best ways in India to spot herds of wild Asiatic elephants coming to drink. After the safari and breakfast, embark on a guided Spice Plantation Walk. Walk through lush estates of cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, and nutmeg, learning about their cultivation and Ayurvedic uses.

Day 3 Jungle Patrol & The Kumily Markets

Today is dedicated to deeper forest exploration. Participate in a guided Nature Walk or the exciting "Border Hiking" program organized by the forest department, led by indigenous tribal guides. This trek takes you to higher altitudes for panoramic views of the reserve. In the late afternoon, explore the bustling spice markets of Kumily. This is the perfect time to purchase authentic, farm-fresh spices and premium Kerala cashews directly from the source.

Day 4 The Offbeat Wilderness of Gavi

Leave the standard tourist trail behind. Embark on a full-day, highly restricted eco-tourism trip to Gavi (approx. 2 hours from Thekkady). Deep inside the Ranni reserve forest, Gavi is a pristine paradise. Enjoy a rugged jeep safari through the dense canopy, followed by a peaceful session of bamboo rafting on the Gavi Lake. This untouched biosphere is home to the endangered Lion-tailed Macaque and the Great Indian Hornbill. Return to Thekkady by late evening.

Day 5 Descent to the Historic Port (Fort Kochi)

After a final breakfast surrounded by the sounds of the jungle, check out and begin the drive back down to the plains toward Kochi (approx. 4.5 hours). Arrive in the historic Fort Kochi area and check into your heritage hotel. Spend the afternoon walking through streets lined with Portuguese and Dutch architecture. Visit the iconic Chinese Fishing Nets at sunset, the ancient St. Francis Church, and the Paradesi Synagogue in Jew Town.

Day 6 Departure from God's Own Country

Enjoy a final South Indian breakfast. Depending on your flight schedule, take a last walk along the Fort Kochi promenade or relax at a colonial-era café. Your chauffeur will transfer you to Cochin International Airport (COK) (approx. 1.5 hours) for your safe journey home, concluding your spectacular wildlife and spice adventure.

Safari Guide

The Periyar Compass

Critical operational details to ensure your jungle treks and boat safaris are seamlessly planned.

Boat Safari Logistics

Navigating Periyar Lake:

  • Booking Rush: The boat safari is operated solely by the forest department (KTDC). Tickets are in extremely high demand and sell out quickly. We handle these bookings in advance. The 7:30 AM slot offers the absolute best chance of spotting wildlife.

Buying Authentic Spices

Shopping in Kumily:

  • Quality Check: Kumily is the spice hub of India. While there are hundreds of shops, we recommend purchasing directly from the plantation outlets or government-approved cooperative stores to ensure you are getting unadulterated, export-quality cardamom and pepper.

Gavi Permits

Entering the restricted zone:

  • Limited Entry: Gavi eco-tourism allows a very strictly limited number of vehicles and visitors per day to protect the fragile ecosystem. Forest department permits must be secured well in advance. Private cars are not allowed; you must use the specialized safari jeeps.

Weather & Jungle Treks

Preparing for the forest floor:

  • Leeches: During and immediately after the monsoon (June-September), the forest floor is teeming with leeches. If participating in the border hike or nature walks, you must wear full-length trousers and 'leech socks' (usually provided by guides).

Ethical Wildlife Viewing

Respecting the animals:

  • No Riding: We actively discourage and do not include commercial elephant rides in our itineraries. We strongly encourage observing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat along the Periyar lake shores or participating in ethical bathing/feeding programs at rehabilitation centers.

Cultural Shows

Evening entertainment:

  • Timing: The Kalaripayattu (martial arts) and Kathakali (classical dance) shows in Thekkady usually run between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM. The theaters are small and intimate, allowing for a highly immersive, up-close experience of Kerala's heritage.
