5 Days / 4 Nights

The Misty Munnar Retreat

A deep dive into the Western Ghats, exclusively surrounded by rolling tea estates, cascading waterfalls, and rare wildlife.

Trip Overview

Sometimes, all you need is the silence of the mountains. This 5-day standalone itinerary focuses entirely on Munnar, allowing you to deeply explore the region rather than rushing from city to city. Situated at 5,200 feet above sea level, Munnar was once the summer resort of the British administration. You will track the endangered Nilgiri Tahr in Eravikulam, take an off-road jeep safari to the highest organic tea estate in the world at Kolukkumalai, and unwind completely amidst endless, emerald-green valleys.

Day 1 Arrival in Kochi & Ascent to the Tea Capital

Arrive at Cochin International Airport (COK). Your private chauffeur will receive you and begin the scenic ascent into the Western Ghats (approx. 4 hours). As the temperature drops, the landscape transforms into lush, manicured tea gardens. Stop en route to view the magnificent Cheeyappara and Valara Waterfalls cascading right beside the highway. Arrive in Munnar, check into your mountain resort, and spend the evening enjoying the crisp, cool air.

Day 2 The Nilgiri Tahr & Tea Heritage

Start your day early and head to Eravikulam National Park. Take the forest department bus up the Rajamalai hills to spot the endangered Nilgiri Tahr, a mountain goat endemic to these ranges, set against the backdrop of Anamudi—South India's highest peak. After descending, visit the Tata Tea Museum to witness the fascinating processing of tea leaves. End the day with a relaxing stroll through the vibrant flora of Blossom Hydel Park.

Day 3 Dams, Echoes, and Elephants

After breakfast, take a scenic drive toward the Mattupetty Dam. Enjoy optional speed boating on the reservoir surrounded by hills and forests. Proceed to Echo Point, a picturesque spot where the natural topography creates a fascinating acoustic echo. Continue to the serene Kundala Lake, where you can opt for a traditional Shikara boat ride. In the late afternoon, visit the Carmelagiri Elephant Park for an up-close interaction with the gentle giants.

Day 4 The Sunrise Jeep Safari to Kolukkumalai

Today features the absolute highlight of the trip. Wake up at 4:30 AM to embark on a rugged, off-road 4x4 Jeep Safari up to Kolukkumalai, the highest organic tea estate in the world (approx. 7,900 ft). Watch a breathtaking, crowd-free sunrise over the jagged peaks of the Western Ghats, with clouds literally floating below you. Return to the resort by late morning for a heavy breakfast and spend the rest of the day at leisure or exploring the local spice markets in Munnar town.

Day 5 Descent to the Plains & Departure

Enjoy a final, misty morning overlooking the valleys with a freshly brewed cup of local tea. After breakfast, check out of your resort. Your chauffeur will begin the descent back towards the coastal plains. You will be dropped off at the Cochin International Airport (COK) or Ernakulam Railway Station (approx. 4 hours) for your onward journey, leaving you deeply refreshed.

Travel Guide

The Highland Compass

Critical operational details to set the right expectations for your high-altitude tea estate retreat.

The Winding Ghats

Navigating the ascent:

  • Motion Sickness: The 4-hour drive from Kochi to Munnar involves continuous, winding hairpin bends. If you are prone to motion sickness, take medication beforehand, avoid heavy meals, and ask your chauffeur to drive at a moderate pace.

Weather & Layers

Packing for the altitude:

  • The Chill: Munnar's weather is drastically different from the hot, tropical Kerala coast. Temperatures can drop to 10°C (50°F) or lower at night, especially between November and February. A warm jacket or sweater is absolutely essential.

Eravikulam Logistics

Managing the crowds:

  • Advance Booking: Eravikulam National Park is highly regulated. Private vehicles are not allowed inside; you must use the government safari buses. We pre-book these tickets online to help you bypass the massive physical queues at the entrance.
  • Closure: The park is closed every year from February to April for the calving season of the Nilgiri Tahr.

Kolukkumalai Safari

A rugged adventure:

  • The Ride: The jeep safari to Kolukkumalai is an off-road adventure. The path is unpaved, extremely rocky, and very bumpy. It is not recommended for pregnant women, infants, or travelers with severe back/spinal issues.

Authentic Tea Buying

Bringing the flavor home:

  • Sourcing: Munnar is synonymous with tea. While local markets have many vendors, the highest quality, unadulterated tea (especially White Tea and Orthodox blends) is best purchased directly from the Tata Tea Museum or KDHP estate outlets.

The Neelakurinji Phenomenon

A rare botanical event:

  • Once in 12 Years: Munnar is famous for the Neelakurinji flower, which blooms massively only once every 12 years, turning the entire hillsides purplish-blue. The last bloom was in 2018; the next is expected in 2030.
