6 Days / 5 Nights

The Backwaters & Beach Escape

Cruise the tranquil labyrinth of Vembanad Lake and unwind on the pristine, secluded white sands of the Marari coast.

Trip Overview

Designed for absolute relaxation, this 6-day tropical escape is the classic Kerala experience. You will begin with the colonial charm of Fort Kochi before descending to Alleppey, the "Venice of the East." Here, you will board a private Kettuvallam (traditional houseboat) for a majestic overnight cruise through the palm-fringed backwaters. Afterward, we transfer you just 30 minutes up the coast to the sleepy fishing village of Mararikulam. Free from the heavy commercialization of other beaches, Marari offers pristine sands, swaying hammocks, and authentic Ayurvedic wellness.

Day 1 Arrival in Kochi & The Venice of the East

Arrive at Cochin International Airport (COK). Your private chauffeur will receive you and drive you south towards Alleppey (Alappuzha) (approx. 2.5 hours). Upon arrival, check into a beautiful backwater-facing resort. Spend your afternoon taking a small Shikara (canoe) ride through the narrow, intimate canals where larger houseboats cannot enter, witnessing the daily life of the locals living right on the water's edge.

Day 2 The Great Houseboat Voyage

After breakfast, transfer to the Alleppey finishing point to board your private, luxurious Kettuvallam (houseboat). As you set sail across the vast expanse of Vembanad Lake, your onboard chef will prepare a lavish, traditional Kerala lunch featuring fresh catch from the lake. Drift past emerald paddy fields, ancient coir-making villages, and flocks of migratory birds. The houseboat anchors at sunset for a deeply peaceful evening on the water.

Day 3 Disembarkation & The Marari Coast

Wake up to the gentle lapping of the backwaters and enjoy breakfast on the deck as the boat cruises back to the mainland. Disembark by 9:00 AM and take a short, scenic drive up the coast to Mararikulam (approx. 45 mins). Check into your beach resort. Marari is famous for its endless, pristine, white-sand beaches, completely uncrowded by mass tourism. Spend the rest of your day lounging under the palm trees.

Day 4 Coastal Serenity & Ayurvedic Wellness

A full day dedicated to rejuvenation. Start your morning with a walk along the beach to watch the local fishermen haul in their daily catch. During the day, we highly recommend indulging in a traditional Kerala Ayurvedic massage at your resort's spa (complimentary for Affordable Luxury & Super Luxury tiers). In the evening, enjoy a romantic candlelight dinner featuring spectacular coastal seafood like Karimeen (Pearl Spot) fry.

Day 5 Colonial Heritage of Fort Kochi

Check out of your beach resort and drive up to the historic port city of Kochi (approx. 1.5 hours). Check into a heritage hotel in Fort Kochi or Mattancherry. Spend the afternoon exploring the 500-year-old history of the city. Visit the iconic Chinese Fishing Nets, the Jewish Synagogue, and the Dutch Palace. In the evening, attend a mesmerizing, highly expressive Kathakali classical dance performance at a local cultural center.

Day 6 Departure from God's Own Country

Enjoy a final South Indian breakfast. Depending on your flight schedule, take a last walk through the colonial streets of Fort Kochi or pick up aromatic spices and Kerala Kasavu sarees from local boutiques. Your chauffeur will transfer you to Cochin International Airport (COK) (approx. 1.5 hours) for your safe journey home.

Travel Guide

The Coastal Compass

Critical operational details to ensure your backwater and beach retreat is flawlessly executed.

Houseboat AC Rules

Understanding cruise standards:

  • Deluxe Boats (Budget): The Air Conditioning only operates from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM while the boat is anchored.
  • Premium/Luxury Boats: The AC runs 24/7. Keep this in mind when booking, especially during Kerala's hot, humid summer months (March-May).

Cruising Hours

Safety regulations on the lake:

  • Anchoring: By Kerala government law, all houseboats must stop cruising and drop anchor by 5:30 PM to allow local fishermen to cast their nets. The boat remains stationary overnight and resumes cruising at 8:00 AM the next morning.

Mosquito Reality

Preparing for the tropics:

  • The Backwaters: Because you are surrounded by freshwater lakes and paddy fields, mosquitoes are prevalent, especially at dusk. All our houseboats and premium resorts are equipped with nets and repellents, but carrying personal bug spray is highly recommended.

Ayurvedic Wellness

Authentic healing:

  • Consultations: Kerala is the birthplace of Ayurveda. If you book a massage at your resort, it often begins with a quick consultation with an in-house Ayurvedic doctor. The treatments use heavy, authentic medicinal oils; expect to shower afterward.

Marari vs. Kovalam

Choosing your beach:

  • The Vibe: We specifically choose Marari for this circuit because it is incredibly clean, quiet, and private. Unlike Kovalam, which is heavily commercialized and crowded, Marari is a sleepy fishing village perfect for undisturbed relaxation.

Houseboat Cuisine

Fresh from the catch:

  • The Menu: Your houseboat will have a dedicated chef. Meals are traditional Keralite (rice, sambar, fresh vegetables, chicken, and local fish). If you have strict dietary requirements (e.g., Jain food or severe allergies), please inform us well in advance so we can stock the boat accordingly.
