Trip Overview
Prepare for a breathtaking transition of landscapes. This 7-day grand circuit covers the absolute pinnacle of Karnataka's history and natural geography. You will begin in the arid, ancient landscapes of North Karnataka, exploring the 6th-century rock-cut caves of Badami and the colossal, UNESCO-listed ruins of Hampi. After immersing yourself in the golden era of the Vijayanagara Empire, you will drive south, watching the landscape transform into the dense, misty forests of the Western Ghats to witness the mighty Jog Falls.
Day 1 Arrival in Hubballi & The Chalukya Caves
Arrive at Hubballi Airport (HBX). Your chauffeur will transfer you through the rustic landscapes of North Karnataka to the town of Badami (approx. 2.5 hours). Badami was the regal capital of the Badami Chalukyas from 540 to 757 AD. Check into your hotel. In the late afternoon, explore the stunning Badami Cave Temples—four magnificent rock-cut caves carved directly out of the red sandstone cliffs. End your day watching the sunset over the serene, emerald-green waters of the Agastya Lake.
Day 2 The Cradle of Architecture & Drive to Hampi
After breakfast, check out and visit the nearby UNESCO World Heritage sites of Aihole and Pattadakal. Known as the "cradle of Hindu rock architecture," these temple complexes are a masterclass in ancient engineering, featuring a brilliant blend of Dravidian and Nagara styles. After exploring the ruins, commence the drive toward the legendary city of Hampi (approx. 3.5 hours). Check into your heritage resort in Hampi or Kamalapura and relax.
Day 3 The Sacred Center of the Vijayanagara Empire
Wake up early to witness a magical sunrise from Hemakuta Hill, surrounded by boulders and ancient pavilions. Proceed to the Virupaksha Temple, the oldest and principal functioning temple in Hampi. Walk along the Tungabhadra River, taking a traditional Coracle (round basket boat) ride. In the afternoon, visit the magnificent Vittala Temple, famous for its iconic Stone Chariot and the fascinating musical pillars. The scale and artistry of these ruins are unmatched.
Day 4 The Royal Enclosure & Sunset at Matanga Hill
Dedicate today to the secular and royal side of Hampi. Explore the Royal Enclosure, including the beautifully symmetric Lotus Mahal, the grand Elephant Stables, and the Queens Bath. Marvel at the intricate carvings of the Hazara Rama Temple. In the late afternoon, embark on a moderately challenging trek up Matanga Hill. The panoramic view of the ruined city, the winding Tungabhadra River, and the endless boulders at sunset is a sight you will never forget.
Day 5 From Arid Ruins to Lush Canopies (Drive to Shimoga)
Check out after breakfast and begin the longest drive of your circuit, transitioning from the dry, rocky plains of Hampi into the lush, dense greens of the Western Ghats. Your destination is the Shimoga (Shivamogga) or Sagara region (approx. 5 to 6 hours). This area is the gateway to Karnataka's spectacular waterfalls. Arrive by late afternoon, check into your nature resort, and enjoy a deeply relaxing, cool evening surrounded by nature.
Day 6 The Mighty Jog Falls & Sharavathi Valley
After breakfast, drive to witness one of nature's greatest spectacles: Jog Falls. Created by the Sharavathi River, it is India’s highest plunge waterfall, dropping a staggering 830 feet in four distinct cascades (Raja, Rani, Roarer, and Rocket). Spend time taking in the viewpoints. Later, explore the misty Sharavathi Valley wildlife sanctuary area or visit the nearby historic 16th-century Aghoreshwara Temple in Ikkeri. Return to your resort for a warm dinner.
Day 7 Departure from the Ghats
Enjoy a final breakfast amidst the cool breezes of the Western Ghats. Check out of your resort. Your chauffeur will drive you to your departure point—either Hubballi Airport (approx. 3.5 hours) or Mangaluru International Airport (IXE) (approx. 4.5 hours), depending on your flight bookings, bringing your grand Karnataka journey to a spectacular close.
