Trip Overview

Breathe in the aroma of freshly roasted Arabica. This highly immersive 4-day itinerary takes you straight into the emerald heart of Karnataka's Western Ghats. You will scale the highest peak in the state at Chikmagalur before driving through dense canopies to Coorg, the "Scotland of India." Here, you'll experience a stunning blend of nature and culture—from the roaring Abbey Falls and verdant coffee estates to the breathtaking golden statues of the Namdroling Tibetan Monastery.

Day 1 Arrival in Bengaluru & Drive to Chikmagalur

Arrive at Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) in Bengaluru. Your chauffeur will receive you and immediately commence the drive towards the coffee heartland of Chikmagalur (approx. 4.5 hours). The urban landscape quickly gives way to lush, rolling hills. Check into your estate resort. In the late afternoon, take a scenic drive up to Mullayanagiri—the highest peak in Karnataka—to witness a spectacular, mist-covered sunset over the Western Ghats.

Day 2 The Canopy Drive to Coorg & Abbey Falls

After a fresh cup of local estate coffee, check out and begin the beautiful, winding drive south towards Coorg (Madikeri) (approx. 4 hours). Check into your resort upon arrival. In the afternoon, visit the roaring Abbey Falls, nestled deep within a private coffee and spice plantation. Later, head to Raja's Seat—a seasonal garden of flowers and artificial fountains where the kings of Coorg once spent their evenings watching the sunset. Return to your resort for dinner.

Day 3 The Golden Temple, Elephants & Coffee Trails

Begin your day with a guided walking tour through a working coffee plantation, learning the nuances of plucking, roasting, and brewing. Next, drive to Kushalnagar to visit the spectacular Namdroling Monastery (The Golden Temple), home to thousands of Tibetan monks and towering 40-foot golden statues of Buddha. In the afternoon, visit the Dubare Elephant Camp on the banks of the River Kaveri, where you can watch the majestic animals being bathed and fed by the forest department.

Day 4 Descent to the Plains & Departure

Enjoy a final, misty morning overlooking the valleys of Coorg. After a hearty breakfast, check out of your resort. Your chauffeur will begin the descent back towards Bengaluru (approx. 5.5 hours), passing through the scenic highway via Mysore. You will be dropped off at the Kempegowda International Airport or Railway Station for your onward journey, concluding your refreshing canopy escape.

Travel Guide

The Western Ghats Compass

Critical operational details to ensure your journey through Karnataka's coffee heartland is smooth and enjoyable.

The Ghat Roads

Navigating the hills:

  • Motion Sickness: The drives up to Mullayanagiri and the transit between Chikmagalur and Coorg involve continuous, winding hairpin bends. If you are prone to motion sickness, carry necessary medication and avoid heavy meals before driving.

Weather & Monsoons

When to visit:

  • Peak Monsoons: During July and August, Coorg and Chikmagalur receive intense, relentless rainfall. Leeches become highly prevalent in the plantations. The best time to visit is from September to March when the weather is crisp and misty.

Namdroling Monastery Rules

Respecting the Tibetan settlement:

  • Silence & Attire: The Golden Temple is an active place of worship and study. Maintain strict silence inside the main prayer halls. Modest clothing (covering shoulders and knees) is required. Photography is usually permitted, but avoid using flash.

Abbey Falls Safety

Viewing the cascades:

  • No Swimming: The currents at Abbey Falls are extremely dangerous, and the rocks are slippery. Swimming or stepping into the water pool at the base of the falls is strictly prohibited by local authorities. Enjoy the view safely from the designated hanging bridge.

Coffee & Spices

Buying authentic produce:

  • Sourcing: Coorg and Chikmagalur are famous for Arabica/Robusta coffee, black pepper, cardamom, and homemade chocolates. We recommend buying directly from plantation boutiques or government-approved cooperative stores in Madikeri to ensure quality.

Kodava Cuisine

The unique flavors of Coorg:

  • Pandi Curry: Coorg (Kodagu) has a highly distinct culture and cuisine. Their signature dish is Pandi Curry (spicy pork curry) cooked with Kachampuli (a dark, tart vinegar). It is a must-try for non-vegetarians, typically served with soft rice dumplings (Kadambuttu).
