The Pristine Coastline Circuit

A spectacular drive down the Arabian Sea, featuring cliff-backed beaches, towering deities, and basalt rock islands.

Trip Overview

Welcome to Karnataka's spectacular western edge. This 5-day coastal expedition takes you down the scenic NH66 highway, hugging the beautiful Arabian Sea. You will begin in the laid-back, spiritual beach town of Gokarna, known for its unique cliffside treks and sacred temples. From there, you will drive south to witness the colossal Shiva statue at Murdeshwar, and finally arrive in Udupi to explore the legendary Sri Krishna Temple and the hexagonal basalt rocks of St. Mary's Island.

Day 1 Arrival & The Cliffs of Gokarna

Arrive at Goa International Airport (GOI/GOX) or Hubballi Airport. Your chauffeur will receive you and drive you down the scenic coastal route to Gokarna (approx. 3.5 hours). Unlike commercial beach destinations, Gokarna offers pristine, cliff-backed shores with a deeply spiritual vibe. Check into your resort. In the late afternoon, visit the iconic Om Beach (shaped naturally like the spiritual symbol) and enjoy a spectacular Arabian Sea sunset from a cliffside café.

Day 2 Spiritual Heritage & Hidden Beaches

Start your morning with a visit to the ancient Mahabaleshwar Temple, home to the revered Atmalinga. After seeking blessings, embark on the famous Gokarna Beach Trek. Walk from Kudle Beach through the forested cliffs to Om Beach, and further down to the secluded Half Moon and Paradise beaches, accessible only by foot or boat. Spend the rest of the day swimming in the warm waters or relaxing at your resort.

Day 3 The Towering Deity of Murdeshwar

After breakfast, drive south along the spectacular NH66 coastal highway to Murdeshwar (approx. 2 hours). Check into your sea-facing hotel. Visit the Murdeshwar Temple complex, famous for the colossal, 123-foot-tall Lord Shiva statue set against the backdrop of the ocean. Take the elevator to the 18th floor of the massive Rajagopuram for an unbelievable panoramic view of the coastline and the statue. Relax on Murdeshwar beach in the evening.

Day 4 St. Mary's Island & Udupi Heritage

Drive further south to the temple town of Udupi (approx. 2 hours). Head straight to Malpe Beach and board a ferry to St. Mary's Island. This geological marvel features rare, hexagonal basalt rock columns formed millions of years ago by volcanic activity. Return to the mainland for a traditional Udupi lunch. In the afternoon, visit the legendary Sri Krishna Temple, deeply immersed in devotion and history. Explore the local markets for authentic Udupi spices and silk.

Day 5 Departure from Mangaluru

Enjoy a final coastal breakfast, savoring local delicacies like Neer Dosa or Mangalore Buns. Check out of your hotel. Your chauffeur will drive you along the final stretch of the coast to Mangaluru International Airport (IXE) (approx. 1.5 hours) for your onward flight, concluding your serene journey along the Arabian Sea.

Coastal Guide

The Arabian Sea Compass

Critical operational details to ensure your journey through Karnataka's beaches and temples is perfectly smooth.

Monsoon Closures

Timing your beach vacation:

  • Ferry Operations: The boat service from Malpe Beach to St. Mary's Island is strictly closed from mid-May to late September due to rough seas during the monsoon.
  • Best Time: October to March offers the best beach weather, clear skies, and safe swimming conditions.

Temple Etiquette

Respecting sacred spaces:

  • Gokarna Mahabaleshwar: The temple has a very strict dress code. Men must remove their shirts and wear a dhoti. Women must wear traditional Indian attire (sarees or salwar kameez). Jeans and shorts are strictly banned inside.
  • Udupi Sri Krishna: Modest clothing is required. Darshan can be crowded; be prepared for queues.

Beach Safety & Trekking

Navigating Gokarna's cliffs:

  • The Beach Trek: Walking from Om Beach to Half Moon/Paradise involves trekking over rocky cliffs. It can be slippery; proper walking shoes (not flip-flops) are highly recommended.
  • Currents: Always swim in designated areas. Some parts of the Arabian Sea coastline have sudden, strong undercurrents.

The Coastal Highway

Driving the NH66:

  • The Drive: The highway connecting Gokarna, Murdeshwar, and Udupi is beautifully scenic, often running parallel to the sea or across massive river estuaries. It is a well-maintained four-lane road, making for comfortable travel.

Culinary Contrasts

Two distinct flavors:

  • Coastal Seafood: Gokarna and Murdeshwar offer incredible, fresh coastal seafood, heavily spiced and often coconut-based.
  • Udupi Cuisine: Udupi is the birthplace of the famous South Indian vegetarian cuisine. Expect purely vegetarian, incredibly flavorful dishes served on banana leaves near the temple area.

Flight Logistics

Entering and exiting the coast:

  • Airports: To avoid long, repetitive drives, we design this circuit to begin at Goa Airport (GOI/GOX) in the north and end at Mangaluru Airport (IXE) in the south. Please book your flights accordingly.
