The Heritage & Pride Trail

From India's first UNESCO World Heritage City to the world's tallest statue.

Trip Overview

Welcome to Central Gujarat, the historic and modern heart of the state. This 6-day circuit beautifully contrasts ancient architecture with monumental modern achievements. Begin your journey navigating the intricate alleys and stepwells of Ahmedabad, travel back in time to the 4,500-year-old Harappan port of Lothal, stand in awe beneath the colossal Statue of Unity in Kevadia, and conclude amidst the royal opulence of the Laxmi Vilas Palace in Vadodara.

In the afternoon, visit the Sabarmati Ashram, the serene spiritual home of Mahatma Gandhi, located on the banks of the river. Spend the evening enjoying a leisurely walk around the beautifully illuminated Kankaria Lake.

Day 2 The Ancient Port & Architectural Marvels

Start your day early with a guided Heritage Walk through the narrow 'Pols' (alleys) of the old city, witnessing intricately carved wooden havelis and the spectacular Jama Masjid. After breakfast, drive to Lothal (approx. 2 hours), one of the most prominent cities of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization, featuring the world's oldest known artificial dockyard. Return to Ahmedabad and visit the stunning five-story Adalaj Stepwell.

Day 3 Ahmedabad to Kevadia (Statue of Unity)

After breakfast, depart for Kevadia (approx. 4 hours), the site of the world's tallest statue. Check into your premium resort or Tent City accommodation. In the afternoon, your chauffeur will drop you at Vadodara Airport/Railway Station or drive you back to Ahmedabad for your onward journey home.

Travel Guide

The Heritage Compass

Critical operational details to ensure your journey through the monumental and historical heart of Gujarat is perfectly planned.

Statue of Unity Logistics

Kevadia operates on strict schedules:

  • Monday Closures: The Statue of Unity and all surrounding major attractions are strictly closed on Mondays for maintenance. We plan your itinerary around this.
  • Express Tickets: The standard viewing gallery queues can take hours. We highly recommend (and include in luxury tiers) the Express Entry tickets.

Best Time to Visit

Central Gujarat can get exceptionally warm:

  • Winter (Oct - Mar): The most comfortable time for walking tours in Ahmedabad and exploring the open ruins of Champaner and Lothal.
  • Summer (Apr - Jun): Temperatures regularly exceed 42°C. Sightseeing must be restricted to early mornings and late evenings.

Ahmedabad Heritage Walk

The old city requires physical readiness:

  • The Terrain: The morning heritage walk through the 'Pols' involves navigating narrow, crowded, and sometimes uneven ancient alleys. Wear highly comfortable walking shoes.
  • Timing: The guided walks usually start at 8:00 AM sharp to beat the heat and the intense city traffic.

The Dry State Rule

Gujarat has strict Prohibition laws:

  • No Public Alcohol: Alcohol is completely banned in public spaces, restaurants, and regular shops across the state.
  • Tourist Permits: Non-resident tourists can purchase liquor from designated hotel shops by showing their flight/train tickets and original IDs, but it must be consumed privately in your hotel room.

Highway Travel & Traffic

This circuit features short, efficient drives:

  • Expressways: The National Expressway 1 connecting Ahmedabad and Vadodara is one of the best in the country, cutting travel time drastically.
  • City Traffic: While intercity travel is fast, expect heavy, chaotic traffic within the city limits of Ahmedabad during peak hours.

Culinary Delights

Gujarat is a paradise for vegetarians:

  • The Gujarati Thali: Do not miss a traditional, unlimited Thali experience. It is a brilliant mix of sweet, savory, and spicy flavors (dal, kadhi, shaak, and farsan).
  • Street Food: Try the famous Khaman, Dhokla, Fafda, and Jalebi—staple snacks that define the culinary identity of Central Gujarat.
