The Eastern Offbeat & Tea Tourism Circuit

Step back in time to the grand era of tea planters, ancient Ahom kings, and raw riverine wilderness.

Trip Overview

Welcome to Upper Assam, the undisputed tea capital of the world. This 6-day circuit is designed for those who appreciate slow travel, deep history, and offbeat nature. You will reside in beautifully restored colonial tea estate bungalows, waking up to the vast expanses of manicured tea gardens. You will track India's only ape species in the Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary, marvel at the 600-year-old architectural marvels of the Ahom Kingdom in Sivasagar, and spot wild feral horses on a river safari in Dibru-Saikhowa National Park.

Day 1 Arrival in the Tea City (Dibrugarh)

Arrive at Dibrugarh Airport (DIB). Your chauffeur will transfer you to your heritage tea estate bungalow or premium hotel. Dibrugarh is globally renowned as the "Tea City of India." After lunch, take a guided walk through the surrounding tea gardens to observe the meticulous plucking process. In the evening, enjoy a curated tea-tasting session to understand the nuances of Assam CTC and orthodox blends, followed by a quiet dinner.

Day 2 River Safari in Dibru-Saikhowa National Park

After breakfast, drive to the Guijan Ghat (approx. 1.5 hours) to explore Dibru-Saikhowa National Park. Unlike typical jeep safaris, this biosphere reserve is explored via motorized country boats. Cruise through the Maguri Motapung Beel to spot rare migratory birds, the endangered Gangetic River Dolphin, and the park's famous population of feral horses grazing on the river islands. Return to Dibrugarh for a relaxed evening.

Day 3 The Ancient Ahom Kingdom (Sivasagar to Jorhat)

Check out and drive south toward Sivasagar (approx. 2 hours), the ancient capital of the mighty Ahom Kings who ruled Assam for 600 years. Marvel at the Rang Ghar (Asia's oldest surviving amphitheater), the sprawling Talatal Ghar palace ruins, and the towering Shiva Dol, one of the tallest Shiva temples in India. After exploring this rich heritage, continue your drive to Jorhat. Check into another majestic tea bungalow for the night.

Day 4 Primate Tracking at Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary

A thrilling early morning start. Drive to the Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary for a guided trekking safari. This unique forest is the only sanctuary in India dedicated to protecting the Hoolock Gibbon (India’s only ape species) and the Bengal Slow Loris. Trek through the dense canopy while listening to the loud, haunting calls of the gibbons. Return to Jorhat for lunch, then visit the renowned Tocklai Tea Research Institute to dive deeper into the science of tea.

Day 5 The River Island Excursion (Majuli)

After an early breakfast, drive to Neemati Ghat and take a public or private ferry across the mighty Brahmaputra River to Majuli—the world's largest river island. Spend the day exploring the ancient Neo-Vaishnavite monasteries (Sattras), where you can witness monks practicing traditional dances and mask-making. Visit a local Mishing tribal village to see their stilt houses and handloom weaving. Take the afternoon ferry back to Jorhat for your final night.

Day 6 Departure from Jorhat

Enjoy a final, luxurious "Planter's Breakfast" on the veranda of your tea bungalow. Depending on your flight schedule, take a last stroll through the aromatic gardens or pick up premium Assam tea from local boutiques. Your chauffeur will drop you off at Jorhat Airport (JRH) or Dibrugarh Airport for your comfortable journey home.

Travel Guide

The Tea & Heritage Compass

Critical operational details to set the right expectations for a seamless luxury and wildlife experience in Eastern Assam.

Tea Tourism Timing

When to see the action:

  • Plucking Season: The active tea plucking and factory manufacturing season runs from March to mid-November. If you visit in deep winter (Dec-Feb), the factories undergo maintenance, and plucking halts, though the estates remain incredibly serene and beautiful.

Gibbon Sanctuary Trekking

Prepare for the jungle walk:

  • The Terrain: Unlike Kaziranga, Hoollongapar requires walking through dense, muddy forest trails. Sturdy walking shoes are mandatory.
  • Leeches: During or just after the rains (April-October), leeches are highly prevalent. We provide leech socks, but full-length trousers are required.

Majuli Ferry Logistics

Crossing the Brahmaputra:

  • The Journey: The ferry from Neemati Ghat takes about 1.5 hours. Standard ferries also transport vehicles and can be crowded. For premium tiers, we arrange private speedboats for a much faster and more comfortable crossing.

Sivasagar Etiquette

Respecting Ahom heritage:

  • Shiva Dol: This is a highly active and revered temple. Shoulders and knees must be covered to enter. Avoid wearing leather accessories.
  • Monuments: The ASI-protected sites like Rang Ghar have steep, narrow stairs. Caution is advised for elderly travelers.

Bungalow Expectations

Colonial luxury redefined:

  • The Vibe: Heritage tea bungalows offer massive rooms, antique furniture, and highly personalized service. However, they are isolated inside working estates. Do not expect commercial city-hotel amenities like bustling shopping arcades or multiple multi-cuisine restaurants nearby.

Flight Connectivity

Arriving in Upper Assam:

  • Gateways: Dibrugarh (DIB) and Jorhat (JRH) are well-connected to Delhi and Kolkata. We design this itinerary to allow you to fly into one and fly out of the other, minimizing backtrack driving.
