The Deep Forests & Hills Circuit

Journey into the Dima Hasao district, where misty hill stations, ancient tribal kingdoms, and avian mysteries await.

Trip Overview

Escape the standard tourist trails and plunge into the rugged, untouched beauty of Southern Assam. The Dima Hasao district is a land of dramatic landscapes, home to the state's only hill station (Haflong), the dense canopy of the Borail Wildlife Sanctuary, and plunging waterfalls. This 5-day circuit is crafted for the true explorer, offering scenic mountain railway rides, profound cultural interactions with the Dimasa tribes, and visits to the mysterious, fog-shrouded village of Jatinga.

Day 1 The Vistadome Journey & Arrival in Haflong

Arrive at Guwahati Airport (GAU). Instead of a grueling drive, we begin your journey with a spectacular ride on the Vistadome train from Guwahati to Haflong (approx. 5-6 hours). This train winds through the Borail hills, crossing massive viaducts, dark tunnels, and dense green valleys, offering panoramic views through its glass-domed roof. Upon arriving in Haflong, Assam's only hill station, your chauffeur will transfer you to your resort. Spend a crisp, cool evening relaxing.

Day 2 The "White Ant Hillock" (Haflong Sightseeing)

After breakfast, explore the tranquil town of Haflong. Visit the serene Haflong Lake located right in the center of the town. Proceed to the historic Circuit House and walk through the local markets to see the beautiful textiles woven by the indigenous Dimasa, Zeme Naga, and Hmar tribes. In the afternoon, take a short drive to the ancient monolithic ruins of Maibang, the former capital of the Kachari Kingdom, situated on the banks of the Mahur River.

Day 3 The Bird Mystery of Jatinga & Borail Safari

Drive just 9 kilometers to the infamous, mist-shrouded village of Jatinga. Known globally for its unexplained bird phenomenon (where migratory birds descend in a daze during foggy autumn nights), it is a fascinating spot surrounded by deep valleys. Later, proceed to the outskirts of the Borail Wildlife Sanctuary. Embark on a guided eco-trek through the dense broadleaf forests, keeping an eye out for clouded leopards, macaques, and incredibly rare bird species.

Day 4 The "Niagara of Assam" (Panimur & Umrangso)

Check out of your Haflong hotel and drive towards the industrial yet incredibly scenic town of Umrangso (approx. 3.5 hours). Stop at the magnificent Panimur Waterfalls along the Kopili River. The river cascades over rugged rocks, creating a roaring, milky-white spectacle often referred to as the "Niagara of Assam." Continue to Umrangso, check into your eco-camp or lodge, and enjoy a peaceful evening by the vast blue reservoir of the Khandong Dam.

Day 5 Descent to the Plains & Departure

Wake up to a quiet morning by the reservoir. After breakfast, check out and begin your descent from the Borail hills back towards the plains. Your chauffeur will drive you either to Silchar Airport (IXS) (approx. 4.5 hours) or Guwahati Airport (approx. 5 hours), bringing your spectacular Southern Assam wilderness adventure to an end.

Travel Guide

The Dima Hasao Compass

Critical operational details to set the right expectations for this rugged, completely offbeat frontier.

The Vistadome Train

The best way into the hills:

  • Booking: The Vistadome coach from Guwahati to Haflong is incredibly popular and features large glass windows and a 360-degree viewing deck. Tickets sell out exactly 120 days in advance. If unavailable, we provide a comfortable, scenic drive via the highway instead.

Accommodation Reality

Managing luxury expectations:

  • The Vibe: Haflong and Umrangso are emerging eco-tourism destinations. Do not expect 5-star commercial resorts. The "luxury" here comes from pristine, uncrowded eco-camps and boutique homestays offering deep tranquility and clean, safe amenities.

The Jatinga Phenomenon

Timing the mystery:

  • The Season: The infamous "bird suicide" phenomenon at Jatinga is highly localized and only occurs on dark, foggy, moonless nights during late monsoon/autumn (September to November) between 7 PM and 10 PM. Outside these months, it remains a beautiful, mist-covered village.

Monsoon Road Conditions

Navigating the Borail hills:

  • Landslides: The Dima Hasao district receives heavy rainfall. During peak monsoon (June to August), the hill roads connecting Silchar, Haflong, and Guwahati are highly susceptible to sudden landslides and closures. Travel during this period requires high flexibility.

Panimur Safety

Respecting the Kopili River:

  • Currents: The Panimur waterfalls are stunning but have incredibly strong, deceptive undercurrents. Swimming or wading deep into the river is strictly prohibited. We highly recommend enjoying the view from the safe, designated rocky banks.

Connectivity & Network

Expect a digital detox:

  • Signal Drops: While Haflong town has decent 4G coverage, network connectivity drops significantly as soon as you enter Borail Wildlife Sanctuary, Panimur, or Umrangso. Download offline maps and carry physical cash.
