4 Days / 3 Nights

The Manas & Lower Assam Wilderness

Track tigers and golden langurs in a UNESCO World Heritage site, and explore the multi-faith heritage of Hajo.

Trip Overview

Journey to the western frontiers of Assam. This 4-day circuit explores the spectacular Manas National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site sharing an international border with Bhutan. Famous for its population of wild water buffalo, tigers, and the incredibly rare Golden Langur, Manas offers a raw, uncrowded alternative to Kaziranga. We pair this wilderness adventure with a visit to Hajo, an ancient town where Hindu, Buddhist, and Islamic traditions have coexisted harmoniously for centuries.

Day 1 Arrival & The Drive to the Bhutan Border

Arrive at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati. Your chauffeur will immediately begin the drive westward towards Manas National Park (approx. 3.5 hours). You will pass through lush tea gardens and vibrant Bodo tribal villages. Check into your jungle lodge near the Bansbari Range. In the late afternoon, take a guided walk through a local tea estate or visit a Bodo village to learn about their handloom weaving traditions.

Day 2 The Manas Safari: Tigers, Rhinos & Golden Langurs

Wake up early for a spectacular Elephant Safari (subject to availability), wading through the tall grasses of the Bansbari range. Return for breakfast. After some rest, embark on an extended, thrilling Jeep Safari deep into the park. We drive all the way to Mathanguri, the incredibly scenic point where the Manas River acts as the international border between India and Bhutan. Keep your eyes peeled for the elusive Golden Langur, Pygmy Hogs, and Bengal Tigers.

Day 3 The Heritage of Hajo & Brahmaputra Sunset

After a final morning listening to the sounds of the jungle, check out and drive back towards Guwahati. En route, stop at the historic town of Hajo. Visit the ancient Hayagriva Madhava Temple, sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists, and the Powa Mecca, a highly revered Islamic shrine. Continue to Guwahati, check into your city hotel, and end the day with a serene sunset cruise on the mighty Brahmaputra River.

Day 4 Sacred Blessings & Departure

Start the morning with a visit to the Nilachal Hill for a Darshan at the revered Kamakhya Temple, one of the most important Shakti Peethas in India. Take in the panoramic views of Guwahati city from the hilltop. Depending on your flight schedule, explore the local markets for Assam silk (Muga) before your chauffeur drops you at the airport for your onward journey.

Safari Guide

The Wilderness Compass

Critical operational details to set the right expectations for your safari and heritage journey.

Park Closures

Wildlife tourism is heavily regulated:

  • Monsoon Shutdown: Like Kaziranga, Manas National Park is strictly closed from May to October due to monsoon rains and road deterioration. The best time to visit is November to April.

Spotting the Golden Langur

A primate found nowhere else:

  • Endemic Species: Manas is one of the only places on Earth where you can spot the endangered Golden Langur. Ask your guide to keep a keen eye on the upper canopy near the Bhutan border at Mathanguri.

The Bhutan Border

An international viewpoint:

  • Mathanguri: The Jeep safari takes you right to the riverbank where the Royal Manas National Park of Bhutan begins. The landscape here transitions dramatically from flat grasslands to towering, forested hills. No passport is required for this view.

Hajo Etiquette

Respecting multi-faith heritage:

  • Dress Code: Both the Hayagriva Madhava Temple and Powa Mecca require modest clothing. Shoulders and knees must be covered. You will be required to remove footwear before entering the temple and shrine premises.

Bodo Tribal Culture

A distinct demographic:

  • The Locals: The area surrounding Manas is inhabited by the Bodo tribe. The food at your jungle lodge will likely feature traditional Bodo elements, which are distinct from standard Assamese cuisine. Hand-woven Bodo garments (Aronai) make excellent souvenirs.

Brahmaputra River Cruise

Sunset in the city:

  • Alfresco Grand: The evening cruise in Guwahati is a beautiful way to see the city skyline. It usually features live music and snacks. We schedule this around 4:30 PM to catch the spectacular sunset over the river.
